Recycling Process

Objective: The students will research, list, and define the steps used in recycling an object/material of their choice.

Materials:

Books and Internet availability for research on the recycling process. See the Literature List and Internet Resources for suggestions.
Chart Paper or chalkboard
Guided Questions Worksheet

Procedure:

Brainstorm with the students different items that can be recycled. List their responses on the chalkboard or chart paper. Responses may be aluminum, paper, plastic, etc.
Pass out the Guided Questions Worksheet for the students to use in collecting information.
Have the students work independently or in pairs to research an object or material of their choice. They should gather information on the process of recycling their chosen object including where the item goes and what it is remanufactured into. Cost and environmental benefits should be included also.
After an appropriate amount of time, have the students present their research findings to the rest of the class.
